2023

Château Pédesclaux 2023 is the 10th vintage produced

in our entirely gravity-fed winery.

Resilient vines – Resilient teams

The warm spring weather compensated for the effects of a colder than average winter, and the vines flowered in perfect, near summer-like conditions during the last ten days of May.

However, tropical conditions set in from June. Hot and humid nights resulted in high mildew pressure. Our teams were immediately ready for action, ably assisted by our resilient vines, which have been bolstered in recent years by our in-depth work on green manure to protect the soils and stimulate microbial life in the soils. This is just one of several key measures launched well before our organic certification in 2022.

Harvesting by plot and intra-plot

The harvest commenced 13 September for the Merlots and finished 4 October on our plots of old Cabernet vines. The harvest was the longest on record here at Pédesclaux, spread over 17 days of picking, compared to the average 11 days since the Lorenzetti family acquired the vineyard.

Ideal weather conditions meant each plot and even sub-plot was harvested at the perfect moment, thereby further underscoring our precision-led approach in the vineyard.

As a result, the 2023 vintage stands apart for its clearly defined nuances of terroir, where each of the 19 soil-types reveals the full extent of its hallmark character.

2023, the vintage of ‘Cabernisation’

In 2023, it’s all about the Cabernets!

Cabernet makes up 80% of the Château Pédesclaux blend, made possible by an extensive Cabernet planting programme launched more than a decade ago. This dominance imparts Château Pédesclaux with great complexity and subtle balance. Ultra-precision extraction down to the very last millimetre, the hallmark of our 100% gravity-fed winery, adds freshness and delicate tannins.

Fleur de Pédesclaux 2023 is an unusual blend consisting of less than a third Merlot and 14% Petit Verdot. The dominant Cabernets accentuate the density and depth, and meld to perfection with floral, spicy aromatics.
